Winner of Queen of The Universe pledges to champion LGBTQIA+ rights

Grag Queen Winner of Queen Of The Universe

The brand new drag singing competition Queen Of The Universe has crowned its first winner.

Brazilian singer Grag Queen beat out American singers Ada Vox and Aria B. Cassadine to take home the first crown.

Following her win, Grag Queen chatted with Variety about her plans for the future.

“We live in a country that kills LGBTQ people more than any other”

Winning Queen Of The Universe is something that Grag Queen doesn’t take lightly.

Hailing from Brazil she’s honest and open about the struggles the LGBTIQA+ community face there.

Grag Queen hopes to be a voice for her community in the future.

“We live in a country that kills LGBTQ people more than any other, and our transgender people’s [life expectancy] is only 35 years old and it’s not fair.”

“We are still trying to find some place of peace.”

“All the time on the internet [we see] people being dragged and being killed and punched every day, but we don’t see that on the news on TV.”

“I really want to use this platform to make people know that this situation is crazy and it’s real.”

Competing on Queen Of The Universe has given Grag Queen an opportunity to be the role model they never had when they were growing up.

“I needed someone to be that, maybe to inspire you to be how you are, to inspire you to sing — however you want to sing.”

“[I] would have loved to have had a Grag Queen to look up to and say, “Okay, this bitch is crazy. This bitch got it.”

Speaking of the responsibility of taking on that role, Grag Queen is sure she’s ready for the job.

“I think the show showed me that I’m ready to do that. That experience was made for me. This is a blessing.”

“I think I got a very, very big heart. That’s what I believe the universe is actually needing at the moment.”

“I don’t really feel like a millionaire right now.”

The grand prize for winning Queen Of The Universe was $250,000, making Grag Queen a millionaire in Brazil.

When asked about what that means for herself, her response highlights the tough conditions of life in Brazil for the singer.

“It feels amazing! I can go to the medic. I don’t look at the prices anymore” she laughs.

But more importantly, she can use the money to help the lives of those around her.

“I can give my mother and father a very good living. I just want us to be protected and healthy, I don’t really feel like a millionaire right now, but I get used to the good things very, very fast.”

Grag Queen is expected to release her album in the coming year.

Queen Of The Universe airs on Paramount Plus in Australia.

Graham Norton serves as host while the show is judged by Vanessa Williams, Michelle Visage, Trixie Mattel, and Leona Lewis.
