Outspoken dance producer Diplo has said that Madonna has gotten a raw deal since the release of latest album Rebel Heart.
“It already sucks to be a woman in the music industry, but to be a boss woman is even harder,” Diplo explained to Rolling Stone.
“She sold out her tour in minutes, but no one seems to want her to succeed – ‘Madonna, we’ve been there, done that, now we’re about Kim Kardashian.’
“Her song ‘Ghosttown’ was a guaranteed No. 1 for anybody else, but she didn’t get a fair shot.”
Diplo, who is riding high on Australian charts with both his tracks “Lean On” and “Where Are U Now”, co-wrote and produced a number of tracks on Rebel Heart, including lead single “Living For Love” and current single “Bitch I’m Madonna”.
“With ‘Bitch I’m Madonna,’ everyone said there’s no way it will go anywhere, but I’m like, ‘Screw it, it represents you more than anything,’” Diplo told Rolling Stone.
Madonna will tour Australia for the first time in decades early next year, but before then, Diplo himself will come to Australia for the Stereosonic festival.
Diplo’s electro-dancehall trio Major Lazer will headline the event alongside international EDM heavyweights Armin van Burren and Axwell and Ingrosso, and Australia’s Peking Duk. Stereosonic comes to Brisbane on December 6 at the Brisbane Showgrounds.
