Hamish Macdonald and Partner

Australian broadcaster Hamish Macdonald has gone through many ups and downs in his career. Still, nothing compares to the ultimate plot twist when he recently revealed his life partner, sharing a wee bit of his personal life to today’s world.

Let’s look at this broadcaster’s background and this mysterious boyfriend that he has recently revealed.

Who Is Hamish Macdonald?

Hamish Macdonald is a 40-year old Australian broadcast journalist and news presenter for international content. He used to work at networks including Channel 4, ITV, Al Jazeera English, and the ABC political panel Q+A show before recently returning to his roots on Australian news and current affairs talk show program The Project.

Here’s a quick rundown of his career:

  • He earned his journalism degree from Charles Sturt University and became a reporter on WIN Television. He then went to the UK and became a news reporter and producer with ITV and Channel 4, along with being an eyewitness for Seven, Nine, and ABC (Australian networks).
  • Years later, he joined Al Jazeera English as their producer and news presenter. He also was Sunrise’s UK correspondent and the senior foreign correspondent and fill-in presenter on 6.30 with George Negus on Australia’s Network Ten.
  • Soon, he became the guest panellist and fill-in presenter of the show The Project, plus the host of two other shows. But rumour has it that the network wasn’t happy with his work, and Macdonald wasn’t satisfied with their support.
  • He then joined the US’s ABC as a senior international affairs correspondent before eventually rejoining Network Ten as a permanent host. He held that position until he became the new host of ABC network’s Q+A, only featuring as a guest in The Project on Friday nights.
  • He replaced Peter van Onselen on The Sunday Project and replaced Tony Jones as the host of ABC network’s Q+A. He was at the helm of the shows, but things didn’t go so well.
  • Viewership plummeted, and he received criticism for an insensitive photo he posted on the same day a hundred Network Ten employees were axed. The online abuse ultimately led to his leaving ABC’s Q+A, saying that he’s now ready for another opportunity.

The Project is part of my DNA,” to quote Hamish Macdonald. “I’ve wandered off and done a few different things over the years but I’ve kept coming back because it’s something I really believe in, it’s a show that I love.”

Throughout his career, he also won the “Young Gay Journalist of the Year” award at the Royal Television Society awards in London. He certainly made himself known in the industry (albeit with some criticisms) but has always been a tad discreet about his personal life, until today.

Is the Australian Broadcaster Gay?

Yes, Hamish Macdonald is definitely queer. Even though he openly received the gay journalist award in 2008, it wasn’t until June 2019 when Hamish Macdonald finally made clear his sexual orientation and announced his relationship with Jacob Fitzroy at a GQ Gentlemen’s Ball in Melbourne.

The couple showed up for the event, walking hand in hand with the biggest smiles on their faces. They enjoyed the evening before Macdonald posted an Instagram photo of him and Jacob Fitzroy with a heart emoji and hashtag #GQBall.

Hamish Macdonald’s followers exploded with love and support for them, with comments like, “Thank you for showing how normal and natural your love for one another is. Simple displays like this help others to feel accepted and part of general society.”

Needless to say, the couple was enormously grateful for the positive support towards their relationship.

While this was the first time Macdonald openly declared his love, it was not the first time that Jacob Fitzroy was on his feed. It took some time before the public announcement, but he had previously shared a picture of himself and Fitzroy previously, enjoying each other’s company by the beach, with the caption “Favourite human.”

Why Aren’t There A Lot of Photos?

Unfortunately, due to the hate speech he received online before, he quit social media open platforms like Instagram and Twitter in the middle of 2020. To quote from an interview, “The abuse has come from left-wing people who don’t like you asking difficult questions of Dan Andrews, and it’s come from people on the right who don’t like you asking difficult questions of the federal government.”

In other words, there’s no way we can retrieve these photos of the gala and the beach from Hamish Macdonald’s Instagram. But one thing is for sure: Hamish is gay and madly in love with Jacob. They’ve also been spotted multiple times on dates, just like this one in Coogee Beach, Sydney.

Jacob Fitzroy: The Mysterious Hamish Macdonald Partner

Enough with the background, so who really is this hush-hush boyfriend named Jacob?

There aren’t a lot of sources to retrieve information from, especially since the couple have both refrained from Instagram and Twitter. Moreover, the couple also has no “coming out” exclusive interviews or long-winded captions on any of their previous posts.

Nevertheless, here are some insider information and career background on the boyfriend:

  • Jacob is much younger than Macdonald, who seems like he’s twice the age of his young lover. But we’ll never know for sure, as there’s no confirmation of Fitzroy’s birthday or age.
  • He’s been in a relationship with Macdonald for more than three years now but has never been as public as they were during the 2019 GQ Gentlemen’s Ball in Melbourne.
  • He is familiar with English, French, and Italian.
  • He was a graduate of Political Economy and Geological and Earth Sciences / Geosciences from the University of Sydney in 2018. He also has other educational achievements from ZHAW School of Management and Law, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and St John’s College Woodlawn.
  • He has climate consulting experience in areas such as Science-Based Target setting, abatement initiatives, and data visualisation and resilience adaptation pathways. He also has a wide knowledge of ESG advisory, including materiality assessments, due diligence, and modern slavery assessments.
  • He has held positions such as Sales and Rental Associate for Belle Property, Senior Analyst for Deloitte Australia, Delegate for One Young World, and is now a Strategic Advisor for Jacobs. As of today, he is working on the Sustainability and Climate Change practice division.
  • He was affiliated with the United Nations as an Australian Youth Representative in 2013 and was a Youth Advisory Council President for Regional Development Australia – Northern Rivers.
  • He has volunteer experience with multiple organisations, including the following: Australian Youth Climate Coalition, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, Lismore City Council, Australia Council for the Arts, Splendour in the Grass, and the International Youth Leadership Conference.
  • He has achieved the following honours and awards: the Young Regional Australian of the Year award, Kids in Community Major Award, Matthew Johnson Memorial Prize, Thomas George Civic Leadership Award, Kids in Community Minor Award, and the Marsden Medal.

The Dynamic Duo Of Two Passionate People

The future looks bright for Hamish Macdonald and Jacob Fitzroy, as they quietly work alongside wonderful families and friends. They may be out of the spotlight for now, but the Australian broadcaster and his environmental lover have certainly caught the attention of our society and this time, not in a politically enraged way!
