The long-delayed film adaptation of heartwarming drag musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is finally coming to streaming in Australia next month.
Amazon Prime Video has released a new trailer for the queer film before it arrives on September 17.
The film follows 16-year-old Jamie New, who doesn’t quite fit in at school. Instead of pursuing a “real” career, the gay teen dreams of becoming a drag queen.
Supported by his mother and his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice and bullying and finds his spotlight.
“I don’t just want to be a drag queen, I have to be one,” Jamie declares in the film.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie first began as a stage musical in the UK’s West End in 2017.
It’s based on a real life story in UK documentary Jamie: Drag Queen At 16 about a teen who wanted to wear drag to his school formal.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie stars newcomer Max Harwood
The new Everybody’s Talking About Jamie film adaptation was delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But now young newcomer Max Harwood, who is gay, will finally make his screen debut as Jamie.
“We [aren’t] telling a coming-out story. This is a story about a boy that wants to be a drag queen,” Harwood explained to Entertainment Weekly.
He said to prepare for the role, he watched “Pose, lots of Drag Race, [1990 documentary] Paris Is Burning.”
“It was a lot of in the mirror looking at my body, practicing lip-syncs to iconic pop songs. Getting my head in the game,” he recalled.
“I hadn’t done any drag before, so the most nerve-racking shoot for me was Jamie’s [first] drag show.
“He does this crazy lip-synch and dance routine. And the whole first part of the movie sort of builds up to you seeing that moment.
“I just knew that I had to absolutely nail that. The day we shot that, it was my first full time in drag.
“On a big shoot day like that, I actually did have those first-show nerves. They spurred me on and spurred me through it, really.”
The new film version of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is written by Tom McRae, who also wrote the original musical.
McRae has said he’s “excited for people to see how much joy we’ve managed to pack onto one screen.”
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie comes to streaming on Amazon Prime Video on September 17.
