What is Qlub? promises Hobart queer dance floor joy and energy

What is Qlub? brings a liberation-focused party space to Hobart. A new queer dance for AFAB and femme-identifying people centred on queer joy, body autonomy and collective expression.

A new queer dance event is inviting partygoers to howl at the moon, flip off the sun, and chant for your dreams and desires to manifest, as What is Qlub? prepares to bring a liberation-focused party space to Hobart this February.

What is Qlub will take place on Saturday, February 14, at The Grand Poobah, positioning itself as more than a typical club night.

Instead, organisers describe it as a dance floor experience centred on queer joy, body autonomy and collective expression.

The event will feature a lineup of queer DJs, dance leaders and provocateurs playing out scenes throughout the night, so the dancing doesn’t stop.

Aiming to recreate the feeling of a wild, communal celebration under a full moon,  equal parts party, ritual and release.

‘Dance like someone’s watching’

Hosted by Ryan Guzzling, What is Qlub? is specifically creating space for AFAB (assigned female at birth) and femme-identifying people.

Organisers describe the night as an opportunity to celebrate freedom of movement, self-expression and form in a supportive environment.

The event will include a tops (clothing) optional space designed to prioritise comfort, autonomy and choice.

“We fought hard for equality,” says Hera Fox, creator and organiser of What is Qlub?

“So why should some people still be shamed into keeping their shirts on?”

“Get your boobs out for equality, and dance like someone’s watching.”

Organisers say the event is grounded in strong community safety values, with a clear focus on consent culture and collective responsibility.

Attendees are encouraged to look out for one another, with a ‘see something, say something’ approach promoted throughout the night.

The event will also be monitored by dedicated safety staff,  playfully titled the ‘Fun Police’  whose role is to ensure boundaries are respected and that everyone feels safe participating in the space.

Due to the adult themes and nature of the event, bookings are essential, with organisers aiming to maintain a controlled and respectful environment for attendees.

What is Qlub? joins a growing number of queer events centring liberation, body positivity and intentional community-building, reflecting broader shifts in nightlife toward safer, more intentional party spaces.

At its core, organisers say What is Qlub? is about reclaiming dance floors as places of connection, self-expression and queer celebration.

Creating space for people to exist freely, loudly and unapologetically
