An inspiring video by Maya, a 20-year-old Canadian student, showing her transition from male to female has been viewed more than 2.5 million times on YouTube.
In the video, which chronicles her journey in a timeline of photographs showing her transition, Maya explains that although she was born a boy, from early childhood she did not feel comfortable as a male and experimented with female clothing.
Maya explained that she had hoped that starting university would give her the opportunity to present herself as a woman and be free from her old identity, but struggled initially with the confidence to be herself.
As time went by, her inner battle was escalating, so she made the bold move to confront her personal demons and participate in her country’s Trans Pride March.
“The March inspired me to finally take steps to become the real me: to transition,” Maya said.
“It helped me develop the confidence to begin changing my appearance to reflect who I really am.”
The turning point for Maya was publicly announcing her transition on Facebook, on New Year’s Day, 2015, when she was just 19.
“Inside you have this internal battle where society is telling you, no, you can’t, or you have all of these messages that put you down and make you feel like you’re not who you’re supposed to be. I may look slightly different but I’ve not changed as a person,” she posted.
“I know life can present struggles that may seem insurmountable, but there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel.”
