UK actor Russell Tovey is starring as an ambitious closeted gay footballer in the new movie “The Pass”.
The night before a make-or-break Championship soccer match, the two rising stars Jason (played by Tovey) and Ade (played by Arinze Kene) share a kiss in their hotel room that is a turning point in their lives and their careers.
Based on the lauded play by John Donnelly, debut director Ben A. Williams’ engrossing drama is split into three nights over the course of 15 years as Jason stays closeted and weighs the cost of denying himself happiness against protecting his public image.
Russell Tovey, star of HBO’s gay-themed drama series Looking, first played the role of closeted athlete Jason in a stage performance of the play.
The movie is expected to be released in the UK in December this year.
