A New Zealand police officer has surprised his boyfriend with a marriage proposal at his graduation ceremony from the police academy.
Constable Erik Meechan from Hawke’s Bay took the opportunity during the ceremony to surprise partner Matty Judd, interrupting proceedings to ask him to step forward.
Judd with their with he and his partner of five years’ family and friends, but he looked stunned as Meechan dropped to one knee and proposed in front of their family and friends.
Judd said yes, to cheers from the crowd including New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush who offered his congratulations.
Meechan told the New Zealand Herald, “I just wanted it to be a bit special, a bit different. That’s a goal achieved.
“My usual style would be to have done it at home while we were watching a movie or something but graduation is a very special event that means a lot to us.”
Judd said the couple had “talked about [marriage] for a while but it’s one of those things that will always be a surprise.”
“He’s normally very reserved – I’m much more likely to do something extravagant,” he said.
“I think he wanted to do something extravagant that I would appreciate. And I did!”
