A survivor of the Orlando shooting has been surprised by his idol Katy Perry on an emotional episode of The Ellen show.
On the show, Tony Marrero told his story about the four gunshot wounds he suffered and the friend who he lost in June’s horrific shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
He also told Ellen that he listened to Katy Perry’s song “Rise” repeatedly during recovery.
“The lyrics to that song are so powerful, every word in that song is powerful, so I embraced it,” he explained.
Then Ellen shocked Tony by bringing out Katy Perry, who hugged him tightly as they – and the audience – burst into tears.
“We’re both so electrified by each other and so inspired,” Katy said.
“I’m happy I could be there in my own little way to help you.”
Katy told Tony she would make his dream of going to film school come true by paying for his first year of study.
Ellen has wanted Tony to come on her show ever since he tweeted her a photo of himself in hospital holding up a sign reading “I’m still swimming, Ellen” alongside a picture of her character Dory from Finding Dory.
