Watch: Meet your Aussie Queen of The Universe, Gingzilla

Gingzilla Queen Of The Universe

Gingzilla is Australia’s very own singing drag superstar.

Having appeared on America’s Got Talent & The X-Factor UK they have now landed a spot representing Australia in the world’s biggest drag singing competition.

Gingzilla will be appearing on Queen Of The Universe set to debut this Friday.

They sat down to chat with Michael James about what we can expect to see on the show.

What can we expect from Gingzilla on Queen of the Universe?

Gingzilla is no stranger to performing on stage, but representing Australia on the global stage was a new experience all together.

“It was amazing. To be the representative of Australia is so like… for a little boy from Baulkham Hills to be on a global stage with singers from India, Mexico, Brazil, China, America, France is so awe-inspiring for myself just to go wow, look at me” they gushed.

After being contacted on social media they were tasked with submitting an audition tape, despite being away from home at the time.

“I was actually in Greece at the time and I was actually singing from on top of a rock on a beach. I sent my little tape in, I was very Sandra Dee from Grease, that was my audition tape. It all kind of fell into place and boom and I’m on the biggest global drag singing competition that has ever been.”

For those who don’t know what to expect from Queen of the Universe, Gingzilla has this to say.

“This is like a drag race finale on steroids. Covered it with glitter and just shot out of a cannon. It is just going to be so epic.”

As well as performing with an amazing array of singers from around the world they got to perform in front of a stellar panel.

With a judging panel consisting of Michelle Visage, Vanessa Williams, Trixie Mattel and Leona Lewis the stakes were high.

“As soon as I walked on stage and I saw their faces my mouth dropped.”

“I was grinning from ear to ear. Here I was, I’d been watching them. Like Michelle Visage for example. I’ve been watching that show since it all started.”

“To stand in front of such an iconic strong incredible icon of a woman and to be showcasing my talent with these incredible artists I was blown away.”

“And to get the feedback that I got from the judges… every single day I’m pinching myself.”

“This show is meant for me”

In a world of continuous cycles of Drag Race it’s easy to think you can compare the two.

However, the experience for Gingzilla was 100% about the singers.

“Comparing it to Drag Race critiques I feel like… these are singers.”

“We are being judged by actual pop divas so they knew exactly what was up. They knew about the voice techniques, they knew about the placement of where you put your voice.”

“They did the whole package. Of what you looked like, your personality, the timbre of your voice, everything. They knew what they were talking about and it was incredible to get that feedback.”

Looking back on performing on X-Factor UK and America’s Got Talent, it was easy to realise this was where they belonged.

“The other two were amazing, brilliant experiences. Walking onto those stages it was like wow.”

“But this competition, to be competing against drag queens that sing, I was like this is my home, this my Olympics you know?”

“This is the people I want to compete against. I felt so at home, I felt seen.”

“This show is meant for me. The two things I know how to do are walk down a catwalk and sing. And they were the two things that were required from me for this time. This was the moment to shine.”

What’s next for Gingzilla?

With the world opening up again and a new stage to shine on opportunities are endless.

But what’s next for Gingzilla?

“I want to be the Michael Buble of drag, wheel me out for Christmas” they laugh.

“That’s all you need to do, I grow the beard, I’ll be the Santa Claus and Mrs Claus of Christmas.”

“I’ve got a Christmas song coming out in a couple of weeks. I have like a deep rich old school Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra voice, it just makes sense to me right? I’m a Christmas queen, I’m so jolly!”

“After that? Who knows! I’m just sitting here with my cup of tea waiting for this show to explode!”

Queen of the Universe will debut on Friday the 3rd of December in Australia, exclusively on Paramount Plus.
