A new “video essay” celebrating the history of queer film has been released online.
Titled ‘Rainbow Flag of Film’ and commissioned by film website Fandor Keyframe, the video is a supercut of dozens of scenes from queer films organised into themes.
“Everything I see, I see in terms of movies,” the video’s creator, French filmmaker Candice Drouet, said.
“When I think of the LGBTQ experience, I think about great LGBTQ films like Blue Is the Warmest Color, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, Before Night Falls and so many others.
“I also think of the rainbow flag and how each color stands for a value in the LGBTQ experience. Red is ‘Life’; Orange is ‘Healing’; Yellow is ‘Sunlight’.
“As I thought about how each of these values can be found in LGBTQ movies, this video formed in my head.”
