Melbourne gay couple Wayne and Tom took a break from making us laugh on Channel Ten’s captivating reality show Gogglebox on Thursday night to share a sombre moment about marriage equality.
We were watching the pair, who’ve been together for 15 years, as they were watching gay couple Andy and Craig at the altar on Channel Nine’s Married At First Sight.
“Are you getting romantic?” Tom asked.
Wayne replied: “No, it’s making me sad.”
“It’s mum’s birthday on Saturday, and the one thing she wanted was to see us married, and we’re never going to get to do it,” he said.
But Tom reassured him: “We can one day.”
The clip of the emotional moment was posted on Gogglebox Australia’s Facebook page, and hundreds of fans commented on the video demanding to know when that day would come.
“So terribly sad that 2 people who love each other haven’t got the legal right to marry. Come on Australia get with the programme!” one Facebook user wrote.
“They can’t get married when they’ve been together for over 10 years, but its okay for two strangers to do it for a TV show…” another wrote.
