Fans of Succession long ago noticed the strange chemistry between Greg and Tom, the two outsiders on the fringes of the Roy family. Now a fan has masterfully edited scenes from the drama to reimagine the hit show as a gay rom-com.

Succession centres on the dog-eat-dog Roy family, ridiculously wealthy owners of a global media and entertainment conglomerate. Family patriarch Logan Roy is elderly and almost died back in Season One. Since then, the narrative has focused on the scheming of his two sons and daughter as they try to seize control of the company. Sometimes, they work in teams and sometimes they go it alone. But everyone wants to be top dog.

While not as obviously grasping as Logan’s children, Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) and son-in-law Tom (Matthew McFayden), also try to position themselves to their best advantage. Neither was born with the same silver spoon as the spoilt and entitled Roy offspring. So, they sometimes team up.

But the pair’s constant blokey, jokey joshing frequently borders on flirtation.

The bromance

In Episode Four of Season Three, Tom asks Greg, “What do you know about, um, Nero and Sporus?”

History buffs know Sporus as the beautiful boy Nero had castrated and then married.

“I’d castrate you and marry you in a heartbeat,” says Tom.

Later in the season, Tom asks, “Do you want to make a deal with the devil?”

“What am I going to do with a soul anyway?” says Greg.

“Do you wanna come with me?” Tom asks him, “Sporus?”

Honestly, you expect this pair to drop the pretence and go the reach-around any minute.

But I’m getting crude and that will no doubt detract from the beautiful trailer you’re about to watch for the newest gay rom-com. Succession, the Romantic Comedy with Tom and Greg.
