Ellen DeGeneres compiled and released a video message thanking Barack Obama for “everything he was able to accomplish in the name of equality” during his presidency.
In the video, posted to her YouTube channel, Ellen said: “Years ago, it would’ve been hard to believe that we could repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, pass the Hate Crimes Act and legalise marriage equality all with one president, but yes we could and yes we did.
“President Obama, we are all so grateful for everything you’ve done in the name of equality, kindness and love. This message is for you.”
Celebrities including Neil Patrick Harris, Lily Tomlin, Colton Haynes, Tom Daley, Laverne Cox, Sia, Evan Rachel Wood, Portia de Rossi, Alan Cumming and Nathan Lane joined in with recorded messages for Obama.
The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons said: “You presided over a period of time that turned out, in many ways, one of the most positive periods ever in the lives of gay Americans.”
In November, Barack Obama honoured Ellen with a prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom.
