Former Prime Minister and high profile advocate for same-sex marriage Malcolm Fraser has died this morning at age 84 after suffering a brief illness.
The news was confirmed by Mr Fraser’s office who released a short statement.
‘It is with deep sadness that we inform you that after a brief illness John Malcolm Fraser died peacefully in the early hours of the morning of 20 March 2015.’
‘We appreciate that this will be a shock to all who knew and loved him, but ask that the family be left in peace at this difficult time.’
Serving as Prime Minister between 1975 and 1983, Mr Fraser’s leadership was highlighted by his embracement of a multicultural Australia and his compassion towards refugees.
In the years following his Prime Ministership, Mr Fraser remained active as a social commentator, advocating a number of causes close to his heart including same-sex marriage, Indigenous rights, racial equality, and the fair and ethical treatment of refugees.
Malcolm Fraser is survived by hi wife Tammy and four children Phoebe, Mark, Angela and Hugh.
