Singer Marc Martel Channels Freddie Mercury In Ultimate Queen Tribute Show

Marc Martel

An acclaimed Queen tribute show featuring unbelievable Freddie Mercury soundalike Marc Martel is coming to the Gold Coast.

The Canadian performer was handpicked by original Queen members Roger Taylor and Brian May to front their official Queen tribute act in 2012, with Taylor describing Martel’s voice as an “uncanny” likeness of their band’s late frontman.

Martel launched The Ultimate Queen Celebration in March last year and will bring it to the The Star Gold Coast later this month.

The performer said audiences can expect a lineup of Queen’s iconic hits but also a selection of songs that reflect Mercury’s musical interests beyond rock, all sung by Martel as Mercury might have performed them.

“I get a little more artistic freedom in this show,” he said.

“I feel like I have a good feel for how Freddie interpreted the music. Later in life, he branched out and did his own things, a few covers and some opera.

“I’ll pick a couple of songs that I wish Freddie recorded in his lifetime and perform them along with the songs that these legendary artists made famous.”

Martel’s amazing soundalike vocals will also be showcased in the upcoming Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, starring actor Rami Malek as Mercury and released later this year.

“They hired me to do some of the singing in the movie [to] give the audience an immersive experience and not be able to tell where the singing is coming from,” Martel told Noise11.

“It’s to make the audience believe they are really watching Freddie Mercury sing.

“I got to go to Abbey Road for a few weeks and do some recording there. It was the first time for me to see behind the curtain in the music industry.

“The movie will be using a mixture of Freddie’s tracks and me and Rami. It will all be done in a way you can’t tell.”
