TUNISIA – LENGTHY JAIL TERMS FOR 6 GAY MEN

Six men in Tunisia have been sentenced to three years in jail after being charged with homosexuality – the maximum sentence the court could hand down. The men were arrested in November after a neighbour called the police to report homosexual behaviour.

The court further ruled that at the end of their jail terms, the men may not return to their hometown for five years. Lawyers for the men say they will appeal the decision, however homosexuality still remains a social and legal taboo in the predominately Islamic Northern African nation.
