The music video for Troye Sivan’s new song Party steps back in time and celebrates, sampling Madonna and featuring a guest appearance by Sir Ian McKellen.
“Expect the unexpected – it’s like a journey,” Sivan teased ahead of launching the title track for his upcoming album, She’s the Best.
Releasing his second track today, Party, he is opening us up to a whole new sound he is exploring.
“What is victory if not celebrated?” says Sir Ian McKellen in the music video opening. The track is partly inspired by the bush doofs Sivan experienced growing up in Melbourne.
It recreates that feeling of a night out that moves from one place to the next with no clear beginning or end.
But what truly surprised us is the song’s music video. Sivan is decked out in medieval armour and takes us from the battlefield to a renaissance of queer delight.

It’s giving Rush meets Game of Thrones
Party brings together collaborators Luka Kloser, Elvira Anderfjärd, Tove Burman, Leland, Rob Feher and Styalz Fuego, as well as Sivan’s brother Tyde Levi.
This is the first time Sivan and Levi have released music together. The track samples Madonna’s 2000 dancefloor hit Music, and the music video gives Rush meets Game of Thrones.
“Dance music sounds very different on a dance floor than it does coming out of your laptop speaker,” Sivan told Rolling Stone Australia. “The repetition becomes almost hypnotic, and I wanted to play with structure in that way.”

Set in the past, the music video directed by Gordon von Steiner was filmed at a castle in Berkeley, England.
“When Gordon von Steiner and I were talking about the video and the song, we kept coming back to the idea that partying is actually quite sacred, especially for queer people,” Sivan said.
“Nightlife is often the first place a queer person finds themselves in a room where they’re not the minority, so it becomes a really formative and liberating space for so many of us.”
“And if letting loose is innate to humanity, which I believe it is, then surely people have always partied. We wanted to know what that looked like.
So we went back in time and threw one.”
The setting is stunning and juxtaposes the music and atmosphere beautifully.
Sivan’s upcoming album is out in October
The video features the voice of Sir Ian McKellen in the introduction.
When Sivan was 14, the pair appeared together in a production of Waiting for Godot in Perth. At the time, Sivan has previoulsy shared the impact it had on him to see an openly gay man enjoying such a successful career.
Sivan has described his fourth album, She’s the Best, as moving between two distinct sides.
“There is this high-octane side to the album that feels really bombastic,” he said, “and then there are the songs that feel like the interior of my mind.”
“There’s this deep sense of longing. The album is a crazy journey.”
She’s the Best is out October 9.
