Dustin Lance Black, Oscar-winning husband of Olympian Tom Daley, will face trial charged with assaulting a reality television star in Soho gay bar Freedom.

The 48-year-old writer attended court Thursday. Police originally charged him with assault in February following an August 2022 incident. Reality star Teddy Edwardes from the BBC’s The Big Proud Party Agency claims Dustin Lance Black threw a drink in her face.

The founder of girls-only club night LICK claimed the incident happened after she asked someone else to leave her table.

‘Didn’t have a drink to throw back so I did choose violence’

“I went out for a couple of quiet drinks with my friends last night. Nothing crazy, and I bumped into Tom Daley and his husband in Soho, who… pretty much unprovoked threw an entire drink over me in Freedom.

“I didn’t have a drink to throw back so I did choose violence. It wasn’t that violent, he got a little tap on the back of the head.

“Tell me why he is crying outside saying it’s a targeted attack and that he’s traumatised and called the police, and I had to wait there for hours whilst the police were asking questions.

“And now I have been cautioned and I have to go in for interviews.”

However, Teddy Edwardes had only praise for Tom Daley.

“I have to add that Tom Daley was lovely throughout he was just trying to defuse the situation.”

Dustin Lance Black

Dustin Lance Black won the  Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2009 for the film Milk.

He and Tom Daley went to Freedom on a child-free date night after dinner out and catching a drag show.  Unsurprisingly, a spokesperson for the writer had a different take on the alleged assault. He said that a ‘punch’ to the back of Dustin Lance Black’s head left him with a ‘life-altering concussion’.

“Mr Black was surprised and saddened to learn that after the other person involved in this unfortunate incident took responsibility and expressed remorse for a punch to the back of Mr Black’s head – which left him with a life-altering concussion – a decision was made to now examine the matter of a spilled drink in a court of law.”

Dustin Lance Black will face trial on August 8 this year.
