Opera Queensland moves away from the traditional this month and presents a modern opera which is sure to impress music lovers and opera adventurers alike.
From the creator of West Side Story, and based on the classic novel by Voltaire, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide combines musical theatre, opera and satire in a truly original production exclusive to Brisbane.
Join Candide on his quest for love, happiness and the perfect world through war, earthquakes, famine and heartbreak. Despite epic disasters and unbelievable misfortune, Candide holds fast to his optimistic belief that everything is always for the best… but is it?
A musical comedy of tragic proportions, Candide explores challenging themes with eccentric humour and dazzling energy – the thinking person’s party piece. See Bernstein’s brilliance up close in the Playhouse – with showstoppers ‘Glitter and Be Gay’ and ‘Make our Garden Grow’, rollicking choruses, quirky staging and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra – on stage and larger-than-life.
Directed by Lindy Hume, Candide features a cast of stars including David Hobson as our hero Candide and Amelia Farrugia as his faithless lover Cunegonde. Bryan Probets joins them as the misguided philosopher Dr Pangloss, and Christine Johnston from the Kransky Sisters will delight as the Old Lady with half a buttock!
Candide will be staged 23 July – 1 August at the Playhouse, QPAC. Tickets are available now via or call 136246.
