The Internet proudly proclaimed last Sunday, August 14, as International Gay Uncles Day.
Thousands of “guncles” from all over the world have taken to social media in the last week to show off their beautiful rainbow families using the hashtags #gayuncleday and #guncles.
Gay Australian bobsledder and proud gay uncle Simon Dunn (pictured) was one of the first to post a photo to Instagram, and he told NBC News he “loves the idea of showing appreciation to gay uncles and aunts.”
“Having a day that your family acknowledge your value to them regardless of your sexuality but also at the same time show your sexuality is accepted by them is truly a powerful thing,” he said.
“Being an uncle is probably one of the greatest joys of my life. My niece and nephews look at me as the greatest person in the world. I’m motivated every single day not to prove them wrong.”
