Brisbane GP and LGBTI health specialist Dr Fiona Bisshop will travel to Darwin at the end of this month to participate in Darwin’s first LGBTI health clinic.
The clinic was started last month by Dr Danielle Stewart (pictured), known to locals as Dr Dani, who opened her own practice, Northside Health NT, in the Darwin suburb of Coconut Grove last October after more than a decade of practicing in the city.
Melbourne GP Dr Ruth McNair facilitated the first clinic last month. It was such a success that it’s returning again this week, operating with some financial help from the Northern Territory AIDS Council but largely on the donation of the doctors’ time.
“Dr Dani recognised an unmet need in the community for doctors who could provide LGBTI services, because currently there isn’t one,” Dr Bisshop said.
“Anyone with HIV has to go to the Sexual Health clinic at the hospital and there is nobody in the Territory prescribing hormones for transgender people.
“With the clinics there’s an emphasis on those people who don’t feel comfortable going to any of the other GPs, and transgender people who don’t have anything else on offer anywhere in the territory.
“I’ll also be doing s100 HIV prescriptions and PrEP prescriptions and just general sexual health and general practice needs.”
The clinic will be held on July 28 and 29 July at Northside Health NT at 4/1 Caryota Court in Coconut Grove, Darwin. If you’re in the Northern Territory and would like to make an appointment, call 7999 7448 or email admin@northsidehealthnt.com.au.
