Sydney’s Inner West is already one of Australia’s most beloved queer neighbourhoods. Now it’s getting a brand new way to celebrate that history with the Inner West Pride Walk.
Officially launching this Saturday, the walk invites people to take a stroll through the stories, people and places that helped shape LGBTQIA+ life in the area today.
The Pride Walk spans 17 locations from Birchgrove to St. Peter’s and shines a spotlight on decades of activism, resilience, visibility and pride.
While the dedicated website won’t be fully available until June 27, we already know this will be a must-do experience for anyone who loves queer history.
Celebrating the people who changed queer Australia
The trail has been developed by Inner West Council in collaboration with community organisations and will feature commemorative plaques and an interactive online map that brings local LGBTQIA+ history to life.
From early activists who fought for equality to the community spaces that became safe havens and gathering points. The walk aims to honour the people who helped create the vibrant queer culture the Inner West is known for today.

Inner West Councillor Mat Howard said the project recognises the area’s longstanding role in Australia’s LGBTQIA+ rights movement.
“The Inner West has long been at the forefront of the fight for equality and inclusion,” he said.
“This Pride Walk brings those stories to life – from the early pioneers of the movement to the vibrant and diverse community we celebrate today.”
Pride square Newtown
One of the key stops on the trail will be Pride Square in Newtown, home to the Inner West Pride Centre.
The venue made history as Australia’s first council funded Pride Centre and has quickly become an important hub for community events, support services and celebrations.
The centre highlights just how significant the Inner West continues to be for LGBTQIA+ visibility and community building.
Building on a proud legacy
The project also acknowledges the work already being done by community groups such as the Sisters and Brothers of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence, whose popular history walks have helped preserve and share local queer stories for years.

According to a spokesperson from the Order, the new Pride Walk is both a celebration of the past and an investment in the future.
“For decades, our communities have fought hard to be seen, heard and celebrated,” they said.
“This Pride Walk honours those who came before us, while inspiring future generations to continue the work of building a more inclusive and joyful world.”
Time to start exploring
The Inner West Pride Walk builds on the area’s reputation as one of Australia’s most welcoming and proudly queer communities.
Whether you’re a lifelong local, a history buff, or simply looking for a new weekend adventure, this rainbow trail gives a look at the stories that helped shape modern LGBTQIA+ Australia.
Lace up your walking shoes, charge your phone and get ready to explore.
The full website will be available on 27 June but for now you can still see the map and read more about each location via the Inner West Council’s website.
