The Butch is Back: brutally funny Reuben Kaye returns to MELT

Kicking 2020 to the kerb, MELT Festival returns with the obscenely intelligent, beautifully filthy, and rib-crackingly funny Reuben Kaye. Reuben returns after 10 years touring abroad. Yes indeed. The Butch is Back!

The multi-award-winning comedian, singer, and self-proclaimed part-time hood ornament returns with a new show, a new band, and new looks to die for. With acid wit and casual sensationalism that is simply delicious, Kaye is fast, on the edge, and brutally funny.

Reuben Kaye explodes with energy, high camp, and filthy humour.

“Imagine if Joan Collins, Tim Curry, and Meow Meow dropped a stack of narcotics and had an orgy… now roll it in jewels and bathtub gin and you’re halfway there.”

Prepare for acid wit and casual sensationalism as Reuben Kaye seduces, enchants, and entrances with the voice of a fallen angel.

Dressed to give Liberace a haemorrhage, Reuben Kaye is what happens when you tell your children they can be anything. You know your mum can’t meet him, but you love him anyway.

Brisbane Powerhouse Artistic Director Kris Stewart says MELT is excited to return after the challenges of 2020.

“We are so excited to leave 2020 in our wake and have a lot of fun with a venue-wide celebration of queer arts and culture that pushes boundaries, explores unique art forms and shares important stories.

“MELT belongs authentically to the local community and is our most creatively diverse event; from big and bright large-scale works to intimate, honest and deeply personal shows.”

Destiny Rogers embarked on her career in the media industry immediately after high school, initially joining Mirror News, which later evolved into News Ltd. She fondly recalls editing Ian Byford's 'Passing Glances: A History of Gay Cairns' as one of her most fulfilling projects. Her investigative work on the history of Australia's COON Cheese and Edward Coon culminated in the publication 'COON: More Holes than Swiss Cheese', a collaborative effort with Dr. Stephen Hagan. Destiny's journey at QNews began as a feature writer, and she was subsequently elevated to the role of Managing Editor of QNews Magazine in 2018. However, in July 2022, she decided to resign from this role to refocus on research and feature writing. For contact, please reach out at
