It’s been four years since Canadian twin pop duo Tegan and Sara released new music, and they’ve teamed up with Lights and Felix Cartal to drop their new single, Our Year.
They shared that the song is “about the exasperation of watching another year get away from you, mixed with the slightly delusional but very real hope that maybe this year really might be your year”.
Our Year is produced by Felix Cartal alongside Lights, completing their West Coast Canadian alliance.
“The moment she came on board, it was clear we were onto something special,” Tegan said.
“The four of us are all West Coast-based, and the inspiration for the song came from our messy relationship with this beautiful city we call home. This beautiful part of the world we choose to live in, and this complicated, sometimes deeply frustrating job we all have.”

Not only is it an ode to Vancouver, but also a tongue-in-cheek response to the cost of living.
Lights described it as a way of “venting about the economy” without abandoning the hope things will get better. The song’s vibe has a hint of summer and a relaxed time with mates that just hits you in the right way.

“You’ve given us so much over the years, and it feels exciting to celebrate this big day by sharing something new with you,” they said.
“A little thank you for all the years you’ve given us. TWENTY-EIGHT of them in this wild business of ours. Hard to believe, but we are immensely grateful to still be making things together and still getting to share them with you.”

“It is with great joy that we made this thing together with a collection of truly wonderful people. At this stage in our career, we want everything we release to feel grounded and purposeful, but also fun.”
“Community has always been at the heart of what we do, so bringing in other artists to build this track together was an incredible experience.”
Tegan and Sara tour next year as special guests on nine dates of Hilary Duff’s The Lucky Me Tour.
“We haven’t toured in a couple of years, and truthfully, we still have a lot of work ahead of us before we’re ready to properly hit the road again,” they said.
“But when the opportunity came up to support Hilary Duff next year, we had to jump on it. Hilary Duff is an icon. Obviously, we said yes. This is what dreams are made of! These are the first shows we’re putting on the calendar, with lots more touring to come around the new album next year.”
“After all these years, it’s still incredibly exciting, and a little nerve-wracking, to walk onto a stage in front of a new audience and earn their attention and applause. But we love doing it.”
