Miley Cyrus supposedly ‘trolled’ Pete Davidson on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last night. The singer gave a valiant rendition of Yvonne Fair’s 1976 hit ‘It Should Have Been Me’.

Suggesting Miley Cyrus trolled the allegedly horse-hung SNL comedian with unexpected mentions of his rumoured romance with Kim Kardashian requires enormous suspension of disbelief. The skit was a promotion for Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party Hosted By Miley Cyrus And Pete Davidson, December 31 on NBC. The show will be executive produced by Lorne Michaels who does the same job on The Tonight Show and SNL.
But back to the song. Miley Cyrus performed a decent enough cover of ‘It Should Have Been Me’. However, no one could ever come close to the power of Yvonne Fair’s iconic version from her 1975 album, The Bitch is Black.
In the blink of an eye, Yvonne’s voice moves from melodious story-telling to the soul-wrenching anguished screams of a scorned lover. It’s impossible to hear her sing about the man that got away without thinking ‘You arsehole’.
Motown sadly never realised Yvonne’s true potential and she ended up working as Dionne Warwick’s wardrobe coordinator. She died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 at just 51-years-old.
It Should Have Been Me
Unfortunately, the video clip of ‘It Should Have Been Me’ starring Yvonne Fair is a little pedestrian. BUT, who doesn’t enjoy the vid of Scottish drag queen Cheri Treiffel interrupting a real wedding with a lip-sync rendition? (And don’t forget to scroll down for Yvonne performing at an LA gay bar in the 1980s.)
Also on YouTube, live footage of Yvonne Fair singing along to tracks from The Bitch is Black at Greg’s Blue Dot gay bar in LA in the early 1980s.
