Got a better way to start the new year than by supporting transgender youth in the Northern Territory following the puberty blocker ban?
When one part of our community is under fire, we all need to stand together.
Just before Christmas, the Northern Territory government delivered a bitter pill for young trans and gender diverse people.
Health Minister Steve Edgington announced the public health system’s access to the gender-affirming treatments would “cease” for under 18’s.
He claimed the Territory’s decision is in the interests of “child safety”.
“In other places, cases have emerged where children as young as 12 were treated outside clinical guidelines, including an absence of parental consent,” the Country Liberal Party (CLP) MP said in a statement.
“Territory kids deserve to grow up free from these dangerous ideologically driven practices with irreversible consequences.”
This follows similar bans in Queensland, New Zealand and overseas.
Such bans have been condemned by medical experts as putting trans youth at risk.
We don’t know how many young people in the Northern Territory this affects.
But we have seen the damage this causes in Queensland and need to stand with those fighting to reverse the ban.
The Vital Collective, a community-controlled collective for the Sistergirl, Brotherboy and LGBTIQAP+ community have started a petition calling for the ban’s reversal.
Have you signed it?
‘This decision is harmful, unjust, and profoundly out of step’
The Vital Collective is a grassroots organising and advocacy group for and by the Sistergirl, Brotherboy, and LGBTIQAP+ communities in the central deserts.
Weekly they run a queer and trans community-controlled health clinic, and they are calling the ban out.
“This decision is harmful, unjust, and profoundly out of step with evidence-based healthcare, human rights principles, and the values of care and community that Territorians hold,” they said.
“The timing of this ban is cruel.”
“Gender diverse young people are already living under intensified scrutiny, stigma, and political attack.
“To remove access to care at this moment compounds fear and distress and places young people at real risk.
Gender diverse young people are deeply vulnerable to harm when healthcare is withdrawn.”
The move to halt life-saving healthcare for trans and gender-diverse youth is more than a policy shift.
It is a reversal from last year in March, when Mr Edgington responded to an Australian Christian Lobby petition that the government was not considering changes to access to gender-affirming care.
So what can you do?
Trans and gender diverse young people deserve to grow up in a country where their identity is respected, and their medical needs are met with compassion, not legislation.
They shouldn’t have to travel to another state to receive gender-affirming care.
Please sign the petition calling for the NT Government to reverse this ban immediately.
We need to send a loud, clear message that the LGBTQIA+ community and our allies will not stand by while trans rights are rolled back.
It takes thirty seconds to sign, but the impact of our collective voice can last a lifetime.
Let’s make sure the NT government starts 2026 knowing that we aren’t going anywhere, and we won’t stop fighting until every trans Territorians feel safe, seen, and supported.
Let’s head into the new year ready to keep up the fight.
Sign the petition now and stand with trans youth in the Northern Territory here.
