Maya Newell’s documentary “Gayby Baby” is being released theatrically in the US.

The film, which raised $104,000 via crowdfunding in December 2012, features four children who invite the audience into their homes and share what it’s like growing up with same-sex parents.

Now the film is being released theatrically and digitally in the US by Supergravity Pictures with the assistance of US YouTube star Connor Franta’s music label Heard Well.

“This film is so powerful. It sheds a new light on same-sex parenting through a unique perspective and unlikely voice, children,” Connor said.

“I am honored to be a part of this movement via ‘Gayby Baby’ and help bring this important message to the masses through thoughtful soundtrack curation and marketing.”

Maya Newell, who herself is the daughter of same-sex parents, said the film was made “because even though families like mine are not featured on billboards, gayby children have existed for generations and have a unique perspective on the world.”

The film was screened in Sydney during this year’s Sydney Mardi Gras and on SBS in March. It’s also available in Australia on DVD and in the iTunes and Google Play digital stores.
