Sam Smith has blamed tequila for his onstage gaffe at last year’s Academy Awards ceremony.
In a new interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Sam addressed the controversial acceptance speech during which he incorrectly suggested he was the first gay winner of an Academy Award.
“It all started with a hip flask… of tequila,” the 25-year-old explained.
“I wasn’t happy with my performance and we thought we had no chance of winning at all, so I was just like, ‘Let’s just get the party started! Let’s have some fun.’
“Had some tequilas, warming up, and then we won.
“And I went up and I mucked up my speech and forgot to say ‘Best Male Actor’, and basically said I was the first gay person to ever win an Oscar.
“And I obviously know I’m not, but my brain and my mouth didn’t work together. Yeah, I mucked up.
“Afterwards I saw Elton John at the afterparty and he was like, ‘I’ve won an Oscar’.
“I was like, ‘I’m sorry. I was young when you won your Oscar.’ I’m joking!”
Ellen also quizzed Sam on his love life, after the singer was recently spotted kissing 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn.
She asked: “You’re not single right now anymore, right?”
Sam replied: “No, I’m not, which is crazy.
“It’s weird bringing out an album and not being single. Because when I brought out In the Lonely Hour, I was so lonely.
“But now I’m singing songs about another guy. I’m quite happy, so it’s quite weird.”
