Drag juggernaut RuPaul’s Drag Race has won Best Reality Show at the 2018 Emmy Awards, its first win in the category.
“Thank you so much!” RuPaul emoted, picking up tonight’s Emmy for best in genre.
“This is so lovely. To the Academy, this is so lovely; we are so happy to present this show” and the “140 drag queens we have released into the wild.”
He then addressed “all of the dreamers out there” and signed off with his trademark, “Listen, if you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love somebody else. Can I get a ‘Amen’ out there!?”
RuPaul picked up Best Reality Host at the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month, and it’s the first time that award and Best Reality Competition Program have gone to the same show in the same year.
Longtime Drag Race judge and mentor Michelle Visage took to Instagram to dedicate the award to all of the show’s drag queens and fans.
“This is for every queen who has hit that main stage, for every kid who felt they never belonged anywhere, for every child who has been thrown out of their home for being LGBTQIA+, for every person out there who loves our show and what we do,” she wrote.
“THIS IS FOR YOU! I LOVE YOU ALL.”
This year, Drag Race received an impressive 12 Emmy nominations and won four Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmys, winning for costumes, hairstyling and direction.
RuPaul’s Drag Race is available to watch in Australia on streaming service Stan.
