Director Dexter Fletcher has dismissed as “rumours” recent claims a gay sex scene is being snipped out of Rocketman, the upcoming Elton John biopic.

Described by as “an epic musical fantasy about the incredible human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years,” the film covers Elton’s early years, including the relationship between the singer and his first manager, John Reid, who was also his lover.

The Daily Mail reported last week that Paramount Pictures bosses were “forcing” Fletcher to cut a 40-second scene featuring lead actor Taron Egerton and Richard Madden in “a nude cuddle,” presumably to obtain a lower classification for the film.

Responding on Twitter, Fletcher wrote, “Seeing much speculation about ROCKETMAN!! That’s good!

“It’s still unfinished so it’s nothing but rumors.

“It has and always will be the no holds barred, musical fantasy that Paramount and producers passionately support and believe in. See for yourself May 24.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the “intimate love scene” will remain intact but sources confirmed “discussions” were held between filmmakers and the studio about the scene.

Egerton said of filming a sex scene with Madden last November, “We went to some places and got quite physical… I’ve watched it back and I think it looks great.”

The actor does his own singing in the film, which also stars Jamie Bell as John’s longtime writing partner, Bernie Taupin, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Elton’s mum Sheila Farebrother.

Rocketman opens in Australian cinemas on May 30. Watch the trailer below:
