Ricky Martin has opened up about playing his first ever gay character

Ricky Martin has opened up about playing his first ever gay character and filming his first ever sex scene in the upcoming season of “American Crime Story”.

The new season of the Ryan Murphy-produced series, titled The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, follows the life of the legendary fashion designer before he was shot in July 1997.

Ricky will play Versace’s lover Antonio D’Amico in the series and he told Entertainment Weekly it’s a “story that needs to be told.”

“We’re going to go mainstream with a story that talks about homophobia, that talks about hate, that talks about indifference,” he said.

“It’s so raw and honest and so dramatic and sad. But at the same time you show the love of Gianni and Antonio and 15 years of struggling, fighting. It’s something that I really wanted to be loud about.”

Versace’s fame at the time meant he and D’Amico kept their relationship a secret, reminding Ricky of the years before he came out in 2010.

“There was a scene where Gianni is weak and almost falling on the beach and I touch him and he goes, ‘Don’t touch me! Paparazzi!'” he recalled.

“That took me back to eight years ago when I was in the closet and it just moved me.”

Ricky told Entertainment Weekly that filming his first on-screen sex scene for the series came naturally to him.

“I thought I was going to be more uncomfortable,” he explained.

“The exhibitionism kicked in for a moment and all of a sudden I was naked in bed in front of 20 people from the crew and another actor I met that same day.

“I was not nervous at all. On the contrary, I was ready to do what needed to be done.”

The series will air in the US in 2018.
