Gladstone LGBTIQ organisation Rainbow on the Reef have confirmed the date for their first ever Pride Festival in their region.

The organisation, based in the Gladstone region, officially established last July. The group want their local community “to make connections, feel supported, have fun and show their pride.”

And this June, they’re gearing up to make a big splash on the local event scene with the inaugural Rainbow on the Reef Pride Festival.

The three-day Rainbow on the Reef Pride Festival 2022 will launch on Friday, June 10, with events across the weekend.

President Heather Richards said the June 10-12 program will be a celebration of Pride unlike anything seen before in the region.

“We have come together to help nurture a culture of Pride in identity and diversity for the Gladstone region and beyond,” she told

“Save the date, and follow us on Instagram or Facebook. We have some big announcements coming up that we are very excited to share.”

Richards said the group has developed the event in consultation with the community. They received 200 responses to a community survey they created last year.

“The survey reached a really diverse range of community members, and the responses have provided clear directions for our team to work with,” she said.

“The event planning is continuing with regular community meetings held where we collaborate to co-design and deliver each element of the festival.

“It really will be for our community, by our community.”

Rainbow on the Reef meets regularly in Gladstone

Last September, the group welcomed close to 400 attendees to its first Rainbow in the Gardens event (below).

The group also hold regular meetings, with all LGBTQIA+ community members, friends, families, and allies welcome to join.

“We would love for some additional volunteers to come on board,” she said.

“There are opportunities to suit any level of commitment and skill set. It’s a great opportunity to be part of something big and meaningful for our community.”

Heather said Rainbow on the Reef are also seeking sponsorship from organisations and businesses who want to support the Pride 2022 Festival.
