Planning a Euro summer this year? The 2026 Rainbow Map has just revealed the most queer-friendly destinations to add to your travel bucket list.
Each year, the European wing of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA-Europe) publishes the map based on current laws and policies directly impacting the rights and lives of LGBTQIA+ people. The Rainbow Map ranks 49 European countries on a scale from 0 per cent (defined as gross violations of human rights, discrimination) to 100 per cent (defined as full equality and respect of human rights).
The 18th annual edition was published earlier this week on 12 May — so if you’re still in the process of planning your Euro summer, it provides the perfect inspo list for your 2026 forays. Ahead, we break down the most queer-friendly destinations to travel to in Europe this year, according to the 2026 Rainbow Map.

1. Spain

The number one destination for your travel list this Euro summer? Spain. The southwestern European country has overtaken Malta for the first time in a decade as the most queer-friendly travel destination in the region, scoring 89 per cent on the 2026 Rainbow Map.
It’s great news ahead of the Gay Games XII, which will be held over ten days this coming June in València, a sunny city on Spain’s east coast.
According to ILGA-Europe, Spain’s number one ranking reflects social, healthcare, and geopolitical advances. They include “a fully functioning depathologisation of trans identities in healthcare, new legal protections, new national LGBTI and trans strategies, a new independent equal treatment and non-discrimination authority, and a determined fightback against far-right attempts to dismantle national trans protections”.
While ILGA-Europe acknowledge more still can be done to progress LGBTQIA+ rights in Spain, the country’s “forward momentum is a good example of what democratic leadership can look like”.
Spain has long been a popular destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers, since it legalised same-sex marriage in 2005. Aside from València, Madrid’s Chueca neighbourhood (AKA, Spain’s gay capital), beach town Sitges, and Barcelona’s Eixample (AKA “Gayxample”) are queer hotspots. But there’s plenty more of the country to discover, from the peaceful mountainous regions of the north, to the Moorish-influenced and sunbaked south — not to mention the notoriously fun party islands off the east coast.

2. Malta

For the first time in a decade, Malta isn’t ranked highest on the Rainbow Map — but that said, it’s pretty close behind Spain at 88 per cent.
The small archipelago country already boasts prime position on travel bucket lists thanks to its prime location in the middle of the sun-drenched Mediterranean, but Malta’s position on the Rainbow Map makes it all the more desirable. ILGA-Europe notes that the country’s drop to number two mostly comes down to the fact that Spain demonstrated more follow-through and progression in LGBTQIA+ rights, while Malta needs to work on more continuous reform and a comprehensive anti-discrimination framework.
Pick your way along the turquoise coastline, or head straight to Valletta or Paceville for a thriving queer-friendly nightlife.
3. Iceland

Euro summer doesn’t have to be all about Mediterranean beaches — head north to Iceland for a taste of midnight sun, lush greenery, wildlife spotting and gorgeous hiking.
The Nordic nation retains its number three spot on this year’s Rainbow Map, but gains two points for a total of 86 per cent thanks to ongoing commitment to legal progress.
4. Belgium

At 85 per cent, Belgium places fourth on the Rainbow Map this year.
The country boasts old cities with scenery straight out of a fairytale, as well as thriving queer scenes in cities like Brussels, Antwerp and Liège. It’s a great spot for your 2026 travels if you’re after a quieter, easy-to-navigate destination.
5. Denmark

A Scandi Euro summer is always a good idea, especially with so many of the region’s countries featuring in the Rainbow Map’s top ten. Denmark is the highest-ranked Scandinavian country on the list with a score of 85 per cent.
Whether you choose to cycle your away around stylish Copenhagen or venture out further to the country’s lesser-known but still beautiful beaches, it’s a must-visit.
6. Finland

Ranking sixth with its score of 70 per cent, Finland is another great country for your list if you’re seeking a not-so-baking-hot Euro summer.
The mild temperatures and lush landscapes make it perfect for nature-based adventuring, but city-slickers will love the welcoming vibes of Helsinki — which boasts a summer pride festival filled with fun, LGBTQIA+ friendly events.
7. Germany

Home to some of the world’s most open-minded sex clubs and LGBTQIA+-friendly bars, Germany naturally finds its place in the top ten with a score of 70 per cent.
Head to Berlin for sweaty summer clubbing (queue Rosalía’s ‘Berghain’) amid Berlin Pride, or explore the beautiful scenery of more rugged locations like the Black Forest and the Bavarian Alps.
8. Norway

Another one for the nature lovers this Euro summer, Norway places eighth with a 69 per cent score.
Enjoy the natural beauty of the fjords that wind their way through the country, or go metropolitan with queer-friendly cities like capital Oslo, historic Bergen or university city Trondheim.
9. Sweden

Sweden rounds out the Scandi representation on this list with its score of 68 per cent.
Naturally, the home of ABBA, Zara Larsson, and Robyn boasts plenty of LGBTQIA+ friendliness to entice travellers. Let the midnight sun lead you to the effortlessly cool Stockholm, or further out to the underrated but unmissable Stockholm Archipelago for island-hopping goodness.
10. Luxembourg

Another spot for the quieter queer travellers, Luxembourg is small but mighty, with a score of 68 per cent.
Enjoy medieval history, scenic hiking trails, and a similarly small but mighty queer scene in the capital city.
11. Greece

It seems you can never quite escape Greece on a Euro summer destination list, and this one is no exception as the country — and its thousands of picture-perfect islands — come in at 68 per cent on this year’s Rainbow Map.
Whether you hit up Lesbos for some Sapphic history, Mykonos for the biggest parties, or Athens for the perfect blend of culture and clubbing, it’s sure to impress.
