Queensland anti-trans psychiatrist, Andrew Amos, has been ordered to stop making online statements about gender by the Medical Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and is barred from having direct clinical contact with any patients.
Dr Andrew Amos is one of Australia’s most prominent opponents of gender affirming care and campaigns against trans healthcare.
He is an academic psychiatrist at James Cook University and chair of the Queensland Section of Rural Psychiatry with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
Dr Amos disagrees with RANZCP over gender affirming care and has argued that it is incompatible with evidence-based practice.
AHPRA imposed a new condition on his registration last week.
He can no longer have direct contact with patients or use social media to spread misinformation about trans healthcare.
Dr Amos must now provide AHPRA with details of all his social media profiles.
He must prove that he has not posted any comments “in relation to gender medicine, gender identity and/or expression and transgender persons.”
He is barred from “any role requiring direct or indirect clinical patient contact” and can only practise in “approved” locations.
Dr Amos’ comments could cause people to self-harm
The Australian reported that four complaints led to the decision by the Medical Board.
One regarding a post on X in September 2024, where Dr Amos said that men who induced lactation were the embodiment of narcissism.
It is believed that this is in relation to reports of a Queensland trans woman who used a combination of hormones and drugs to bring on lactation to breastfeed her son.
Two anonymous complaints were made over an ABC quoting Dr Amos on X.
He said that “there is no reliable evidence that trans identification can be differentiated from psychosis.”
Saying that “doctors who affirm gender delusions are liable for patient harms”.
Another complaint in September 2025 saw an exchange on X between Dr Amos and UK trans man Professor Stephen Whittle.
In the exchange, Amos suggested Whittle was a woman pretending to be a man.
As a result of these posts, trans people might not come forward to get medical care.
The complaints felt that Dr Amos’ comments could cause people to self-harm.

‘It is important people feel safe when receiving healthcare’
Dr Amos has spoken out against laws that outlaw conversion therapy, inclusive language in schools and gender affirming care.
A spokesperson for the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency said in a statementthat healthcare is delivered free from discrimination.
“It is important that people feel safe when receiving healthcare and have confidence in regulated health practitioners,” the spokesperson said.
“We respect practitioners’ freedom of expression, including advocacy via social media, provided it does not involve abuse, discrimination, or pose a risk to public safety.”
“We can confirm that on 26 February this year, the Medical Board of Australia imposed conditions on the registration of Dr Andrew Amos.
“The conditions prohibit Dr Amos from engaging in social media posting in relation to gender medicine, gender identity and/or expression, and transgender persons and provide a definition of social media and a list of common platforms.”
Lyle Shelton calls for the ban to be lifted
Family First National Director Lyle Shelton has called for the ban on Dr Amos to be immediately lifted.
“If AHPRA and the LGBTIQA+ child gender clinics had nothing to fear, they would not need to silence their critics,” Shelton said.
“Gagging a senior psychiatrist for raising evidence-based concerns about irreversible medical interventions on children is not in the public interest.”
“AHPRA’s job is to protect the public, not protect an ideology. When regulators punish doctors for participating in scientific debate, public confidence in the medical system is shattered.”
Family First is calling for the immediate lifting of conditions and a review of the regulatory decision.
Dr Amos has declined to speak to media outlets since the ban.
