Internet Reacts To The “Power Rangers” Reboot’s Gay Superhero

Power Rangers Gay Reboot

The new big-screen “Power Rangers” reboot will debut the franchise’s first gay character, and she’s touted as the first openly LGBTI superhero in a big budget film.

Yellow Power Ranger Trini, played by actress Becky Gomez, questions her sexuality in the film, and director Dean Israelite hopes the “small” but “pivotal” plot point will resonate with younger audiences.

“For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

“She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’

“The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”

The news follows Disney’s announcement that the character of LeFou in their remake of Beauty and the Beast would be gay, prompting homophobic outrage in countries including Russia.

“Power Rangers” opens in Australian cinemas this Thursday.
