Liberal Party Room Sticks With Plebiscite Option

same-sex marriage plebiscite

A Liberal party room meeting in Canberra took less than two hours to vote in favour of maintaining its election pledge to stick to a plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

The private members’ bill for a free vote in parliament, headed by West Australian Senator Dean Smith (pictured), was heavily defeated in the party room.

Only seven Liberal Party members voted in favour.

Hence, the government will again try and get its plebiscite option through the Senate although there is next to no chance of that happening.

Plan B is to hold a postal vote on the issue.
