Former reality TV star Jordan Bruno has been crowned Mr Gay Pride Australia for 2018.

Jordan found fame after appearing on Channel Seven series My Kitchen Rules, but after the show he became a high-profile advocate for marriage equality and LGBTI mental health and launched a series of classes encouraging young people to cook.

The Perth hunk was competing against seven other Mr Gay Pride Australia hopefuls including Daniel Pasquali from Queensland; Jonny Watson and Troy Griffiths from Victoria; and Daniel Megson, Jordan Hubbard, Nicholas Steepe and Steven Bruni from New South Wales.

The contestants were selected following a public vote online and an onstage appearance at the Midsumma Carnival.

“I want to thank everyone for coming out today and being a part of this amazing community it’s a real honour to represent this community,” Jordan said on stage at Midsumma Festival’s Carnival event.

“I’ve had so much support and there is so much inspiration here, everywhere you look there are inspirational people that have done so much and I hope that I can leave a fraction of the legacy that these guys have.

“All seven of us are fighting for a different cause, which gives you an idea of how much work there is left to do in this community, whether it’s in the Army and Defence Force, regional Australia, trans kids in schools, mental health issues.”

They were judged on their public speaking abilities, their character and the work they’ve done for the LGBTI community.

Jordan will go on to represent Australia in this year’s Mr Gay Pride World Competition, which will be held in Knysna, South Africa in May.

The international competition’s stated goal is to find a spokesperson who will push for global equality for the LGBTI community.
