Pete and Chasten Buttigieg show off their two babies

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and husband Chasten today announced the birth of two children. A photo posted to Twitter showed Pete and Chasten Buttigieg each holding a child.

Pete Buttigieg also announced the names of the two children in his tweet.

“Chasten and I are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we’re becoming parents. We are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to our family.”

Pete Buttigieg announced in August that they had become parents while giving away very few details.

“For some time, Chasten and I have wanted to grow our family. We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents! The process isn’t done yet. And we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy offered to us. We can’t wait to share more soon.”

Today’s photo and announcement seem to indicate the birth of twins.

Pete and Chasten Buttigieg first talked publicly about wanting children in early 2020. Chasten’s memoir suggested the subject arose even earlier in their relationship.

Today’s announcement from Pete and Chasten Buttigieg

Earlier this year, Pete Buttigieg became the first openly gay person to hold a Senate-confirmed position in the US Cabinet. Following his unsuccessful 2020 bid for the US presidency, he agreed to serve as former rival Joe Biden’s Transportation Secretary.

His role makes Buttigieg and his husband America’s highest-profile same-sex couple.

While many people took to Twitter to congratulate the couple, the inevitable troglodytes turned up to rain on the parade. No need to share their vitriol here. Just the usual hateful bullshit.

But Tesa, @LesVanilla, probably had the best response to criticism of the pic.

“God forbid someone take a picture of a happy moment.”
