Michael Angelakos, lead singer of US indie electro band Passion Pit, has come out as gay and opened up about his emotional separation from his wife.
I told very few people in my personal circles because I dont know how to talk about it, you know?” the 28-year-old told writer Bret Easton Ellis on his podcast.
When this was all happening recently, finally, I just decided it might be best to talk about it here. I dont really know what happened, but it’s just one of those gut feelings. It’s the same gut feeling I had when I said, Okay, I just need to talk to people about the fact that I am.’ I’m gay. And that’s it. It just has to happen.”
Michael married his wife Kristina Mucci in 2013 but the couple announced their separation in August.
It always been about putting it off in my head – not consciously. I just wanted so badly to be straight, because I love her so much. So I think that was one of the most painful things about when we decided to separate,” he explained.
“She said, I don’t want anyone to think that this is your fault, because you’re gay. It’s not your fault.’ And she was so sweet about it.
When I decided to really deal with it head on, which was in June, she was the one who spearheaded it in a way. She said, ‘Whatever happens right now is whatever. You need to figure out what’s going on with your sexuality ・you can’t hate yourself anymore.’
“For what its worth, she’s really been one of the most incredible people.”
Michael later took to Twitter to thank fans for their support.
“Everything’s going to be okay,” he tweeted on the band’s account.
“I’ve received so many kind and supportive messages today. Thank you for reaching out and being so kind to me.”
The band’s last album was Kindred, released in April.
