NSFW! Vintage nude male photographer Arax of Paris

Born in Armenia, Gregor Arax fled Turkey for Paris in 1922. A photojournalist, he became famous for his images of bodybuilders which subsequently led to a career as a vintage nude male photographer.

The career of Arax of Paris stretched over four decades of the mid-twentieth century.

He enjoyed the custom of a wealthy patron, Lucien Bacquemane. The French poet was considered the most important collector of bodybuilding photographs in France, if not the world. He commissioned Arax to photograph bodybuilders onstage and off. Many of the bodybuilders agreed to pose naked. Lucien Bacquemane’s collection comprised at least 7,500 stamped, dated and captioned bodybuilding photographs, most of them in bound albums.

Arax also sold his vintage nude male photos to collectors in the US. To defeat the notorious US postal inspectors, he covered the genitals in waterpaint figleaves which his buyers could remove with a little water.

Charles Kassapian

Bodybuilder and movie actor Charles Kassapian was a favourite model of Arax of Paris.

Helmut Riedmeier

Twice Mr Universe, 5 times Mr Europe and runner-up to a young Arnold Schwarzenegger in Mr Europe 1966, the prolific nude model also posed for English vintage nude male photographer John S Barrington.

Hubert Thomas

After posing for Arax in Paris, Hubert Thomas from Swansea in Wales went on to become Mr Britain 1951.
