It’s a milestone years in the making but tonight longtime Melbourne newsreader Peter Hitchener will present his 10,000th news bulletin.
The Nine News Melbourne favourite has been counting down to the bulletin on Sunday night (October 5), his 10,000th after an incredible five decades on Aussie TV.
The much-loved newsreader fronts Nine’s weekend news after recently wrapping up decades as the network’s weeknight anchor from 1998.
Hitch has been proudly counting to 10,000 on social media, and asked his Instagram followers to help him pick his tie for Sunday night.
“This achievement I never dreamed possible as a teenager when I first started out on radio and television,” he wrote.
“It’s a great honour to be reaching this milestone on Sunday the 5th of October and I’d love you to join me!”

60 years working in the media
Sunday’s bulletin is another milestone for the Melbourne news presenter after he proudly celebrated 60 years working in media back in July.
Peter Hitchener began working in news in 1965 at 4BH Brisbane, before moving to the ABC.
He moved to Nine in 1973 in Sydney before relocating to Melbourne the following year.
By 1998, Hitch was in the anchor chair at Nine News Melbourne. He came out as gay a decade later in a newspaper interview in 2008. Last year, Hitch moved to Nine’s weekend bulletin.
