New York has been confirmed as the host city for World Pride in 2019, the year that marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots of June 1969 which saw a violent backlash against constant police harassment and raids of gay bars.

The riots are often cited as the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement.

党The Stonewall riots were the beginning of our community fighting for an end to harassment and persecution by standing up for our human rights,・said Eric Sawyer, co-founder of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), one of the most well-known HIV/AIDS and LGBT activist groups.

Held every few years, previous World Pride host cities include Toronto, Rome, Jerusalem, and London. The next world pride will be held in Madrid in 2017.
