Although the series is set to end soon, Neighbours have announced another first, casting a non-binary character.

Actor Kathleen Ebbs has announced they will be taking on the role.

They will be playing the character of Asher Nesmith on the program.

Another first for Neighbours

The casting of a non-binary character is another first for Neighbours after a string of progressive changes for the show.

Back in 2018 Neighbours celebrated the wedding of their first gay couple Aaron and David.

Two years later the couple went on to become parents on the show.

In that same year the show also aired their first lesbian wedding.

Transgender actress Georgie Stone also made history as the shows first trans character Mackenzie in 2020.

When it was announced that the show would be ending, its stars paid tribute to the programs queer legacy.

Kathleen Ebbs to play first non-binary character

Non-binary actor Kathleen Ebbs took to Instagram to make the official announcement of their casting on the show.

“Welcoming the first non-binary character to hit Ramsey Street,” they posted with a photo of themselves on the set of Neighbours.

“As someone who grew up watching this iconic soap it was an honour to not only be a part of this amazing cast, but to be that representation I so desperately needed as kid” they went on to say.

“I hope I’ve done my community proud and you enjoy Asher as much as I enjoyed playing them.”

“Here for a good time, not a long time!”

Their first episode featuring Ebbs playing Asher Nesmith will air on May 10, 2022.
