UK-born model Kris Smith has joined other high-profile Australians in supporting gay marriage.
The Australian-based Myer ambassador endorsed same-sex marriage with a telling Instagram post of two hands forming to make a heart.
The multi-coloured picture carried the slogan, “I don’t care if I lose friends for sharing this. I support gay marriage or, as I call it, marriage.”
Writing beside the picture, Smith continued: “Isn’t it time the world gets out of the Stone Age and allows humans to be happy with who they are, and share THEIR lives with whoever they want…”
The post was greeted with a slew of positive comments as many of his 55,000 Instagram followers echoed his views. @KrisSmith
The conversation about gay marriage is squarely back on the agenda after Ireland’s recent vote to legalise same-sex marriage.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s attempt to change the Marriage Act to apply to the union of “two people” rather than “a man and a woman” didn’t get off the ground in Parliament this week.
With Prime Minster Tony Abbott’s anti-marriage equality stance it came as no surprise that the government benches were empty as Mr Shorten rose to speak.
The failure to secure bipartisanship means Australians will almost certainly have to wait more than three months to secure marriage reforms and end the bickering among politicians on the issue.
