She shocked and delighted her patient fans with a surprise cameo with Katy Perry at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, and now AWOL rap icon Missy Elliott has revealed she’s back in the studio.
“I’m actually going down to be with [longtime collaborator Timbaland], and so we’re gonna get in and get some work done,” Elliott told US radio station SiriusXM.
“I don’t want to say too much, because in this day and time you say something, and they will come back two weeks later like ‘Um, where your album at?’”
Missy tweeted a photo of her and Timbaland in the studio, but dance producer Diplo went one better and shared snippets of Missy’s vocals on a new song, “Take U There”, that he produced with dubstep vanguard Skrillex under their supergroup moniker Jack U.
In 2008, Missy was diagnosed with Graves disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid, and she has said she now manages the condition with diet and exercise.
But a decade after her last album, Missy’s Super bowl medley of her (greatest) hits “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It” and “Lose Control” saw the three songs jump back onto the US iTunes charts, according to Billboard.com.
An emotional Missy said she was surprised by the reception years after she was forced to leave the spotlight.
“Tbh I didn’t realize how much I was missed til last night,” she tweeted. “I’m crying y’all 4give me I just can’t stop thanking God & y’all.”
