85-year-old James “Gypsy” Haake has proudly proclaimed the title of “the world’s oldest working drag queen,” and he’s still going strong: he just recently become friends with Miley Cyrus.
Haake appears in the music video for Miley Cyrus’ latest single “Younger Now,” and took to the stage to perform live with Cyrus at the MTV Video Music Awards late last month.
He got his showbiz start in New York on Broadway, and appeared in so many different shows he earned the nickname “Gypsy”. He retired in his 30’s but two decades later was lured back with a role in a production of La Cage Aux Folles. He still regularly performs in drag in California nightclubs.
Haake told HuffPost his interpretation of drag is different from the “new, artsy” styles of the newer generations of drag queens on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
“Lord knows the drag I do is way beyond what people really want to see,” he said.
“I am comedic value, not here for my looks, just to make you laugh… Well, maybe my legs you’ll be jealous of ― but not my face.”

He said he has nothing but praise for Miley Cyrus.
“Miley Cyrus’ fans will be very jealous of me because she gets to kiss me quite a few times,” Haake told USA Today.
“This is a very smart woman. She’s 24 years old. She looks 18 and she’s tiny. She’s beautiful and very, very smart.”
