Fox Sports presenter Megan Barnard says, “It’s OK to be gay,” in an interview with News Corp about her outing by former colleague Tom Morris.
Morris outed Megan Barnard in a social media message.
“Unfortunately, she’s a lesbian. Lads, Megan Barnard, she’s f_cking hot as. My view, the hottest girl at Fox by a long way but unfortunately, she’s got a licker licence, and she’s very very good at it.”
Fox Sports fired Morris following the leak of that message and another riddled with misogyny, racism and homophobia.
Megan Barnard addressed her outing in an Instagram post a couple of weeks later.
“Coming out is a process and should never be taken out of someone’s hand. Nor should anyone be spoken about in such a degrading manner. I hope my experience can be a catalyst for change in not just the sports industry, but in every industry.”
It’s OK to be gay
In today’s interview, she describes forcing people out as dangerous.
“No one should ever be forced to come out before they’re ready, it can be dangerous.
“Some people might not think it’s a big deal in this day and age but it still is, no one knows what you suffered when you were younger and talking about your sexuality is such a private, personal piece of you.
“People have messaged to share their stories, struggles and fears of coming out — and of being outed.
“I have tried to respond to everyone that has contacted me.
“And if this resonates with just one person and makes them realise it’s OK to be gay, that it’s not something to hide or run from then sitting down for this article has been worth it.”
