Aussie kid’s TV favourite Play School has featured another same-sex couple and their family in an adorable “Through The Windows” segment.
The segment in last Thursday’s episode introduced Play School’s viewers to two girls, Azra and Wednesday, and their two dads as a part of the show’s “My Family, Your Family” series.
Azra and Wednesday share some of their favourite family activities including swimming lessons, yoga and story telling.
The Play School episode is available to watch online at ABC’s iView streaming service here, with the Windows segment at the 18:55 mark.
The long-running show put out a casting call for the two dads and their children in February as part of the “My Family, Your Family” series, which also feature “an adopted family, an extended family, a blended family, and an Indigenous nuclear family.”
“The idea is to reflect current Australian society by showing a range of family structures and backgrounds,” Play School executive producer Jan Stradling said at the time.
“We will look at how they care for one another and share experiences, roles and responsibilities. All of these factors are common aspects that promote a sense of belonging for a child regardless of family type.
“The focus of the ‘Through the Windows’ segments is always on the child and the favourite activities they love to do with their families, the emphasis being on spending time together.”
In 2004, the ABC famously aired a Play School segment showing young Brenna Harding on a family outing with her two mums, which was met with political outcry at the time. Play School, which this year is celebrating its 50th year on air, revisited the family in an anniversary retrospective that aired earlier this month.
