Marcus, congratulations on winning Mr Bear QLD during Northern Exposure 2014. It’s been almost 6 months since you took the crown, how have you enjoyed this time?
Thank you. The past 6 months has been one continuous rollercoaster ride of fun, laughter and a chance to meet some truly amazing people throughout our community. I have been overwhelmed by how supported I have been along the way over the past 6 months. The positivity from people of my win and our club has been a stand out and made me feel so proud to be a part of it.
What was your reason (s) for competing in the competition?
I entered the comp to assist with my own body issues and to boost my self-confidence. I always felt like I had so much more to give to life but constantly held myself back due to my low self-esteem. It was never about winning for me. It was about standing up there and being heard and believing in myself for once in my life.
What’s the strangest place you have worn your sash?
I generally keep the sash hidden away in the closet at home. One particular day after one of our regular den nights it was hanging over the chair at home. When I woke from the night out I may have danced around the house wearing it claiming that sash queens do not have to do housework!!! Let’s just say after one look and a roll of the eyes I was back to scrubbing the floor in no time.
In June 2015 you will be travelling to Victoria to compete for the role of Mr Bear Australasia. How are you feeling about competing for the Mr Australasia Title?
I am really looking forward to meeting all the other contestants and spending the week having many laughs and meeting the many people who have supported my journey so far. The events over the week look very good so I will be looking forward to joining in on all the fun.
The 2015 Brisbears theme is ‘Love the Skin you’re in.’ Why do you think this is an important message?
I love the theme “Love The Skin You’re In”. It sums up my own personal journey and I feel it is a very important message to get across to our members and wider community. To be comfortable with who you are and how you feel about yourself is an important part of life. To learn how to appreciate your body and to be confident in life is no easy task. I love that we as a club have recognised the need to focus on this and to encourage all of our community to embrace your body and yourself and Love the skin you’re in.
What do you love about the skin you’re in?
I have been on my own personal weight loss journey for 18 months now. I love being able to look in the mirror and feel happy with my body and to except it also. It’s not perfect, nor do I want it to be. However I have never felt as empowered as I do now knowing I can look in the mirror, be happy with my body, accept what I have and embrace it.
As ambassador for the community, what would you say to someone thinking about coming to their first Brisbears event?
I often get approached by members of our community with many questions about coming to our events. I tell them to join us once and see what it’s all about. I always say once you’ve been to one event you will be back again. At the end of the day we are a social club and without our members support we would have no club. We know how to party hard and how to have fun in a safe and happy environment where everyone feels welcome.
